List No.22: The Kitchen List

Yay! Can you see it??? It’s here!!! My Smeg has arrived and it’s all white and shiny. So, speaking of things I love in the kitchen this week’s list is about just that, what I love about my new kitchen but also a few things I’d do differently in retrospect. THINGS I LOOOOOOOVE ABOUT MY KITCHEN * Obviously my new Smeg refrigerator. It’s just so lovely to look at and it works just fine despite some bad reviews. * The recessed spotlights. I think I love them more because I didn’t expect to have them and they feel like a gift even though I most certainly paid to have them put in. * The glossy shiny cabinet doors. I just love how they bounce off the light and I’m happy every time I walk past the kitchen. Fingerprints do show but we use the handles when opening and closing the doors and don’t touch the doors themselves much. * The subway tiles. Choosing everything for the bathroom and kitchen went so fast so I just went for something I’ve always liked the look of for the bathroom and didn’t really consider very many other options and then went with the same for the kitchen. I still have a few square meters in the basement which will come in handy when I’ll fix the WC sometime in the future. * The corner cabinets with the carousels inside. I thought I’d hate them but there wasn’t any other choice for the size of my kitchen. I tend to like things square and angular when it comes to storage and that carousel is anything but being the shape of a Pac Man but I love it. I can get to everything in there really easily and I’m surprised how much stuff I get in them. * The handles. I love the clean look of the centered handles.   THINGS I MIGHT DO DIFFERENTLY “NEXT TIME” * I’m not loving the sink that much. I do love the big size which allows me to put a whole frying pan in there but the bottom is flat and I find it hard to rinse it so all the little bits get to the drainage hole. Now they just seem to spread out all over. * Like I said things went so fast ordering everything and the white tap was actually matching the white acrylic counter top with integrated sinks which I didn’t get because of the long delivery time. I completely forgot to change the tap to chrome which would look better with the stainless steel sink I ended up with. That’s easy to change though. * The placement of the light switch for the lights under the cabinets. We used existing switch placements for the kitchen and living room but they’re all outside the kitchen so when I’m doing dishes and would like more light I have to step outside the kitchen area to turn the lights on. The only light switch in the actual kitchen is the one on the exhaust hood so I tend to use that a lot. * The fact that the dish washer front is still missing and the smell of the dish washer in action. Wille likens it to “New Car” scent which he hates more than the smell of cat poo. I keep telling him I can get him a Wunderbaum with "New Car" but he’s not interested. I somehow don't think he'd go for cat poo either actually. So, that’s this weeks list! Happy weekend!

List No.21: Things I need to Get for the House Part 2

Um, so after last weeks list I got a few things for the house… * Living room furniture. Seriously, I have a bed in there (not counting the new bed I got at IKEA on Sunday which I sleep on) and a bookshelf and that’s it. And why, oh why didn’t I get the two armchairs I saw at the local charity shop yesterday? I’m betting they will be gone when I get there tomorrow… I got them! Wille was a bit surprised to say the least when he saw them but I explained that I have plans… I think I'll do a quick fix on the cushions to begin with just to cover up those pink florals… The name? Galaxy! And no, they weren't a bargain I'm afraid but they are very swively and very comfortable and very white. And Mini likes them. * A carpet for the living room. I think I will need something to pull the sitting area together. * Fabric for a shower curtain. Oooh, I still need to show you the bathroom! Wiiiiie! * An assortment of lamps. Lamps are so tricky. And expensive. * A TV for the upstairs hall/den. Once we have that we can move the white one from upstairs to downstairs. * A full length mirror for the hall. I accidentally left ours at the old house when we moved. I got one at the charity shop but it turns out it's like one of those mirrors at the fun fair where you look really short and stumped. I think I need to get another one, it's not good for self esteem. * A small writing desk for me. I’ve given up on the idea of the home office upstairs. Check out that mid century brown thing by the window! * A bedside table for me and one for Wille. I ordered a Camponibili and will pick it up this weekend! * An armchair for the den. * Hooks for the hall. Ordered! * A table for outside. I'm making do with a couple of old trestles and an old oilcloth covered table top this summer. Next year I hope to build a deck/get a deck built and then I'll get a proper table. So, this weekend I'm super busy. Again. I'll try and finish Wille's built in shelves and hopefully I'll be able to start organizing the basement. Oh, and I also want to paint. Like everywhere. Look at the photo above and you can see why. And on Sunday my friend Sanna is coming over and if the weather's nice I hope we'll do some weeding. I'll also try to squeeze in a bath and some wine drinking. Actually the wine drinking is a given. Happy Weekend!

List No.20: Things I need to Get for the House

So here’s a little sneak peek of the kitchen with some of my contractors doing their magic on it. I love these guys!!! This was the state of the kitchen on the day we moved in exactly a week ago. It has since been finished and I promise I’ll show you more next week after I get a chance to take some decent photos this weekend! So on to this week’s list: Things I need to get for the house. * Living room furniture. Seriously, I have a bed in there (not counting the new bed I got at IKEA on Sunday which I sleep on) and a bookshelf and that’s it. And why, oh why didn’t I get the two armchairs I saw at the local charity shop yesterday? I’m betting they will be gone when I get there tomorrow… * A carpet for the living room. * A small writing desk for me. I’ve given up on the idea of the home office upstairs. * A bedside table for me and one for Wille. * An armchair for the den. * Hooks for the hall. * A table for outside. I hope to get most of these things second hand cheaply but will probably spend a little more on some items. I really look forward to shopping but at the same time I dread having to spend time going places when all I want to do is stay at home and tinker about. So, now I’m hoping for decent weather this weekend, a few more hours of sleep per night than this past week and that those armchairs are still available! Happy weekend!
